Lifelong Communities

Atlanta, GA

County-based partnerships committed to the creation of a better community for all ages.

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Area Agency on Aging, as a division of the ARC, worked very closely with the ARC’s Board and its planning staff to develop a process for planning Lifelong Communities. In many respects, the Atlanta Regional Commission, and its AAA, have been the model for planning for aging in place.

The ARC describes its planning process as transforming “the region from the bottom up. Rather than create one regional plan that local communities implement, professionals with a wide range of expertise, older adults and caregivers form local county-based partnerships. These community groups then analyze the local data, challenges and opportunities; identify priorities and implement strategies.”

For the Atlanta region, Lifelong Communities have three major goals:

  • Promoting housing and transportation options
  • Encouraging healthy lifestyles
  • Expanding information and access to services.
