This pilot program was initially made available to 10 Parks and Recreation agencies across the country. Participating agencies received free step counters and guidebooks to hand out to everyone who signed up. During kick-off events, individuals learned how to use their new tools to begin a healthy change in lifestyle. At the conclusion of the pilot program, individuals were surveyed and the results revealed that respondents' increased their level of physical activity and most were likely to continue some sort of regular walking program independent of the program. The surveys indicated that 44% of respondents said they walk more frequently than they did before joining the program. Nearly a quarter or more of the respondents noted changes in six different areas: energy level, endurance, weight, strength, mood, and self esteem. Building on the success of the first year, 20 Parks and Recreation agencies participated in 2008 and that number increased again to 30 in 2009.
The National Recreation and Park Association is a non-profit advocacy group whose primary mission is “to advance parks, recreation and environmental conversation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people,” as stated on their website.
