The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) encourages its 1,500 member organizations to institute programs for seniors through the publication of research reports, collaboration with other organizations, production of webinars, promotion of case studies, and the provision of other resources, such as those found in the “Older Americans Outreach Toolkit.”
Their initiatives on aging have gained the APTA national attention and, as a result, many programs that focus on older adults have been implemented by transportation associations across the country.
In 2006, APTA was honored with an award from Association Trends for their ‘Easy Rider: Advancing Mobility Needs for the Aging Population’ CD, considered to be a technological innovation in outreach. APTA promotes their Easy Rider Initiative every May during Older Americans Month when they target their “Telling Our Story” Initiative towards the submission of programs that benefit older adults to be showcased on their website. They also formed a TransitVision 2050 Task Force that produced webinars in late 2007 followed by a final report, in 2008, that outlined key challenges and opportunities for transportation systems in 2050. A key issue discussed throughout the TransitVision 2050 conversation was the Aging Population and how transportation could be designed to meet the needs of this growing demographic. Reports APTA published over the years have also examined the realities of demographic and social issues such as “Aging Americans: Stranded Without Options ,” published in April 2004 and “Funding the Public Transportation Needs of an Aging Population,” released in March 2010. They promote education and awareness initiatives such as “Older Driver Safety Public Awareness Week,” which occurs throughout the 2nd week of December.
The American Public Transportation Association is an organization that promotes the strengthening and improvement of transportation systems throughout the country. It guides its 1500 member organizations through education, advocacy, and innovation to implement programming and development that will provide the most benefit to all demographics. Among the key issues addressed are safety, accessibility, energy efficiency, and affordability.
